Penang, Malaysia: Day 1

I boarded the 3:20 pm Jetstar flight to Penang.  It was not a full flight and thus I was able to get an aisle seat.  The Malaysian immigration ran out of “white” visitor arrival card so we entered Penang without any documentation requirements.  There was a long queue at the taxi stand as people were coming back from the Easter Holiday.   Public bus took an hour (RM 2.70) to reach Komtar (the central bus area, see picture left).

I took a while to find my hotel G Inn as the building numbers on both sides of the MacAlister Road differed greatly.

The hotel staff at G Inn was friendly and the room comfortable. My slight comment was that it was a bit way out to the key tourist areas.   It is still walkable, but maybe more suited for visitors with vehicles.

After freshening up, it was dinner time.  Most food stalls at Lorong Selamat (off MacAlister Road and opposite Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall) were closed and I ended up having Hokkien noodles and cuttle fish-spinach noodles at the coffee shop next to Sunway Hotel.   The road name should be Lorong Baru.  It was a lively area in the evening with  street hawkers selling desserts and apong.  A good place to sample Penang Food.
